Putting The Bags Down – Sofitel Abidjan Cote D’Ivoire

Coming back from nearby Assinie, we were missing what had become our “home base”. Abidjan, a city we had become quite familiar with since spending an entire week rounding up our visas for Liberia, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea.

After a short 100 km, shared taxi journey back to the city we were welcomed by doormen at Sofitel Abidjan Hotel D’Ivoire. Entering the vast modern foyer felt like entering a different world. The hotel, situated on the edge of Ebrié lagoon, stares at the vibrant skyline of the Plateau. Known to be the best hotel in all Abidjan, The Sofitel boasts a movie theatre, the largest pool in the country, three restaurants, a large gym with great view and over 400 rooms. The hotel received a renovation a few years ago and has brought it up to the European standard of 5 star hotels. Booking two nights we had time to enjoy a bit of everything the hotel had to offer.

There are no shortage of dining options at the hotel. Breakfast at the Sofitel was as elaborate a spread  as I have ever seen. Omlete station, cheese table, breads and pastries table, full English breakfast, even sushi. There was everything you could want for breakfast and more. For lunch and dinner the other two a la carte restaurants were open. We dined at the French restaurant. A large selection of wines, true french cuisine with a menu that changes every two weeks this place and amazing views of the hotel grounds and city. It is a great choice to dine in. There is also three bar/lounges to choose from indoors with another poolside bar. The 23rd floor is a great place to enjoy a cocktail and watch the sunset.

If you love movies, its best to check one out at the Majestic Theatre Cote Divoire. The theatre is brand new and shows most of its films in 3D. Its also the only movie theatre in the country. It runs the latest movies in both French and English. It runs two times a night with more screenings on the weekends.

The pool never seems to end. Its a series of pools that connect to one another throughout the grounds of the hotel. You could spend hours swimming before you navigated the entire length. There is a modern gym with excellent views of the busy city and a tennis court on the grounds to enjoy a match.

Although a nights stay here isn’t budget. Starting price is around $250 USD a night. You will certainly not be disappointed in the quality of beds, amenities or service you get for this price.
